Cevat Genç and Uğur Taş, known as the famous sons of Istanbul, are the driving forces behind Cevherun. Both developed their craft through years of training at respected jewelry workshops in Istanbul’s iconic Grand Bazaar. Cevat, an experienced jeweler, gained a deep understanding of production and sales during his ten-year career at the esteemed Hilat Kuyumcuları. Uğur, captivated by the art of goldsmithing from a young age, developed an unwavering passion for the alchemy of jewelry making. After honing his skills with Hilat Kuyumcuları, he opened his own workshop, creating magnificent masterpieces and innovative designs using pure 24-karat gold for elite jewelry houses and wealthy clients in Istanbul.
In 2010, the duo came together to establish Cevherun. Uğur took on the role of master jeweler, while Cevat managed production and sales. They quickly gained recognition as a modern brand inspired by the past, with their elegant designs, influenced by historical references, becoming highly sought after. Recognizing the global demand for well-designed and excellently crafted 24-karat gold jewelry, Cevherun expanded to Dubai, China, and the United States. A chance encounter in 2012 with Turkish-born jewelry designer Nazly Botas, based in New York, led to a lasting collaboration in design and marketing.
Istanbul’s jewelry history has rich and fascinating roots dating back to the Byzantine era. The Grand Bazaar, established in the 15th century, rapidly became a vibrant hub for craftsmen, including many talented jewelers. These skilled artisans created intricate jewelry and other precious items for the city’s elite. Ottoman sultans often entrusted these jewelers to craft luxury items and personal adornments, solidifying Istanbul’s reputation as a leading center for jewelry. The knowledge and expertise of these artisans have been passed down through generations, ensuring that this vibrant tradition continues to thrive in Istanbul today.
Cevherun’s workshop carries on this deep-rooted tradition by training master jewelers. After years of training, the most skilled artisans can earn the title of jeweler. Every piece of Cevherun jewelry is handcrafted by just two master jewelers, supported by an elite group of apprentices. This meticulous approach ensures that each product meets the highest quality and craftsmanship standards.
Our design inspiration comes not only from Istanbul’s vibrant cityscape but also from the rich history of the Mediterranean region. The ancient Hittites, Greeks, and Romans have left behind numerous extraordinary works that serve as a source for our ideas. From figurative interpretations of local myths to plant and animal symbols, we draw inspiration to create necklaces and rings. Ancient Greek and Roman coins featuring figures such as Apollo, Medusa, Athena, Alexander, and Dionysus are transformed into pendants and earrings, turning into tangible remnants of the past. The jewelry-making techniques used during the Hellenistic and Etruscan periods find expression in our clips and medallions, while the various decorative forms of the Ottoman period offer a rich variety of geometric motifs.
